Marin County Kitchen design

Marin County Kitchen designThomas Wold partnered with Sheryl Drinkwater (architect) and Brad Charlstrom (contractor) to help a young family renovate their kitchen. The client had an unchanged ranch-style home from the 1950s located in Marin County.

Wold worked with the architect and homeowners on developing a new look and function of the kitchen, as well as fabricated and installed the new casework. What resulted was asignature Thomas Wold-style kitchen. If you've seen Wold's work before, then you know what I'm talking about.
The big island integrates seating so the room could be conducive to casual eating and socializing. Overall, the client wanted a youthful feel, so Wold settled on a soft palette of two solid colors to complement the uniformed Anegre veneers plus a neutral white CaesarStone counter. The yellow on the "office" cabinets is only seen in this area to note it's unique function. The area above the fridge is white opaque Plexiglass sliding doors cut with a laser jet.

My Kitchen Update...(Via Made by Girl)

Thank you soooo much for those of YOU commented so far (on this post) & emailed giving us some suggestions regarding our kitchen re-do. I got 2 bids so far & will probably get two more this weekend! Based on OUR BUDGET and the bids, it doesn't seem like we may be getting uppers this time...

To be HONEST our budget is $5000 & that would have to cover painting cabinets white & some kind of uppers. (Am I crazy???)

Now, the only OTHER option we thought about was that WE paint ALL the cabinets ourselves and then use the rest of the money for uppers. Hmmmm . It's the labor that is KILLING this whole deal for me.....oh, decisions, decisions & all I want for CHRISTMAS is a white kitchen..... (ok, and uppers too)!

(click on pic to see larger image)

I'll be HONEST, I'm a bit bummed out, but we have to move ahead & hope the next 2 bids give us some better news!

My Kitchen Re-do & Suggestions Needed... (Via Made By Girl)

This week I'm having a few LICENSED contractors over my place to give me estimates on my kitchen.  I've been dreaming of having an all white kitchen for quite sometime now.  The photo that really did it for me was shot by Donna Griffith and was featured in the January 2010 issue of Style At Home magazine.

It's my inspirational picture for my kitchen re-do. Normally, we would TACKLE this project ourselves, but I just don't feel there is room for MISTAKE! Get what I mean?? Plus, we're LACKING time & this project requires several days to get it done right! My current cabinets are new (great condition) but not the best looking cabinets, in fact they are just plain BLAH UGLY!!!  I'm thinking of several options for the re-do, all the while trying to stay on a REASONABLE BUDGET.

My options:
  1. Have the current cabinets painted all WHITE (boxes and all)
  2. Get ONLY the doors/drawers replaced to a shaker style (in white) and get the boxes painted white.
Believe it or NOT there is a 3rd option: To paint the existing cabinets all white, and then ADD UPPERS as well! Of course, the 3rd option may be quite pricey!! But what do I know??  I've never done this before.  Have you???

As for the back splash & hardware..... I have a few ideas and resources I may try.

Backsplash: Perhaps a carrara marble tile from a company called Oracle Tile & Stone or plain white subway tiles.
HardwareEither black or Chrome from Restoration Hardware or Lowes OR??

I WOULD REALLY LOVE YOUR INPUT & any RESOURCES you can provide where I may be able to save some $$$ money. Please leave your suggestions on which option you think I should go for.

REMEMBER, I'm getting quotes this week, so I'll more than likely go with the most reasonable one.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

A Modern Home in Paris....(Via Made By Girl)

How amazing is this modern pad in Paris?? I'm really loving the DARK hardwood floors combined with white interior walls (my absolute favorite look)....sorry, I'm JUST not into colored walls anymore! Wallpaper however... I will do!

Placing LARGE scale ART on white walls makes the white not seem so stark. The ARTWORK or PHOTOGRAPH seems to pop even more when placed on a white background...of course, that's my opinion.

Oh....to live in a place like this in Paris, what a dream!!

The design is by French designer Vincent Parreira (who I'm looking forward to seeing more of) and it's an eighteenth century home converted into a modern masterpiece.

We Stretched the Jeannie Mills Canvas...(Via Made By Girl)

I FINALLY got my Jeannie Mills canvas wrapped/stretched. NOOO, not professionally, this time I decided that me & my hubby would do it ourselves! Even though I was shaking at the knees, we went for it.  As you can see, here's our first try....not bad huh?!? Thank God nothing bad happened while we were playing Mr. & Mrs DIY.

We ALSO bought a custom frame & are awaiting it's arrival! I'm SUPER excited to hang this aboriginal art in our new place. I have another painting I bought that's much LARGER than this one, it's by Janet Golder (she's also a popular aboriginal artist).

If you're LOOKING TO BUY some aboriginal artwork, expect to dish out several $100's of dollars, if not more, they can be pricey depending on the artist!!

Jeannie Mills usually SELLS OUT quickly, I'm quite excited we got this one! You can also check Ebay for this kind of art, and a few deals hopefully!

What did I like best??

Her cool white drawers, all the colorful yarn & of course....her inspiration board!

Toronto Designer Jacquelyn Clark ..(Via Made by Girl)

For all those of you based out of Toronto, Canada... I want to introduce a talented, young Interior Designer named Jacquelyn Clark who also runs a blog called Lark & Linen. Jacquelyn is passionate about her work, which is a great recipe for success if you ask me.

I'll let her describe a bit about herself and her design style (in her own words):
"I aim to provide spaces that simply make people happy. Spaces that people are excited to come home to. I love the mixture of elements - a little old, a little new... things that are a little unexpected, but still liveable and useable. Ones that invite people to come in, sit down, take their shoes off and stay a while. I love design in all shapes and forms; I always have and I always will.  I live and breathe it day in and day out."

Soooo in love with this blue & white powder room! I also like the yellow accents...

Eco Friendly Garden Furniture

When choosing eco-friendly garden furniture, is it enough for it to be FSC certified? Should we be sticking to local materials or choosing garden furniture made from salvaged or recycled materials?
Is it more sustainable to choose garden furniture made from local materials, or garden furniture made from salvaged wood?
These elegant loungers are made from salvaged teak
The sustainable furniture option does not have to mean compromising on design

The teak will age elegantly over many years to a soft silver grey.
No need to oil, wax or varnish.

Sustainable garden furniture choices can be a minefield as there is no one right answer. Here are some simple tips to keep in mind when making your decisions...

1/Buy garden furniture made from locally produced wood

There is no excuse for buying teak furniture (even if it is sustainably forested) when so much environmental damage is done shipping it halfway around the world. Choose English Oak from local managed woodland, or if you must have teak, choose furniture made from salvaged or recycled wood

2/Buy recycled garden furniture, or garden furniture that is made from reclaimed materials

Furniture made from recycled or reclaimed materials is clearly the most sustainable option. Garden Boutique have a great choice of stylish recycled metal garden furniture and wooden furniture made from reclaimed wood. These materials are already in circulation and so have a limited impact on the environment.

3/Avoid oil based paints and stains.
Choose wood that is suitable for outdoor use without treatment such as oak, sweet chestnut, larch, western red cedar or douglas fir. If you must colour your wood, choose water-based products so that any wooden furniture can be recycled or composted at the end of its useful life.

This garden furniture is made from 100% recycled aluminium.

Making this garden furniture reuses waste aluminium and consumes only 5% of the energy needed to produce aluminium from ore.

Is Your Guy Clueless During the Holidays?.... (Via Made By Girl)

Sometimes MEN can be CLUELESS when it comes to giving gifts.  For instance, last year MY guy asked me what I wanted....(I wanted a surprise) but how do you tell him YOU WANT A SURPRISE, then it's NO longer a surprise! Duh.

Either way, I give him credit for TRYING, even if he does bring me something I never even thought of buying for myself. Like socks....

This year I've decided to take a NEW approach (take notes ladies), I've decided to post my wish list via my blog for him to peek at. Here he'll be able to select one, two or three of the items to give to me as Christmas gift this year. Brilliant!

It's WEIRD because he knows me VERY well, but sometimes he just gets STUCK on what to get me. BABE, now I've made it easy for you, just choose.
Now, I'm sure he'll hit the mark, I'm quite relieved!

Is your guy clueless when it comes to gift-giving??  OR Does he usually hit the mark?

P and T Interiors: Blk & White DECOR...(Via Made by Girl)

P and T interiors is run by Pol G. Theis, a talented designer whose design firm is based out of New York City.  I can't imagine a better place to be an Interior Designer these days! With so much amazing real estate and lovely brownstones it's no wonder Pol & his team work there. P and T Interiors believes in translating the CLIENT'S LIFESTYLE into their space. Your home is a reflection of who you are & your lifestyle is too, so it makes perfect sense.

After looking through their extensive portfolio, this particular brownstone stood out to me!  I've been very much into BLACK DOORS lately (still thinking about painting mine) and love what they did to this place!! Don't you?

I like how they added lots of black & white color throughout as well as a patterned wallpaper for interest! I love their funky work and you New Yorkers are lucky to have them in your town!
